The 2003 Ho'ike had a wonderful turnout. Eight (8) halaus, seven from Florida and one from Georgia participated in this years competition each with their own style of dance. Most of the competition was for Hawaiian dancing--the category with the most turnout was the hula auana, naturally. Just barely fitting our 27 students (18 girls and 9 boys) on the stage, we took third place with our portrayal of "Kawika" in auana style. The Tahitian section is always lots of fun also. Three groups were able to compete in the Group Otea section.
Because the competition took place in a hotel, some of us were able to get hotel rooms which were a great help after the competition. Just about all of us were too tired for words. When the competition was over, those of us who suffered the wrath of costume making (and you know who you are) collapsed on the beds in a deep sleep. All others jumped in the nearby pool to relax and talk story. We all cannot wait until next year, which is anticipated to be even bigger than before with groups coming from across the United States.
