Article: Kalena's Polynesian Ohana Takes Second

On March 19, 1988, the keiki's of Kalena's Polynesian Ohana in Waialua, under the direction of Isitolo and Evelyn Oloa, entered the Keiki Tahiti Fete Competition which was held at the St. Louis High School Gym. This competition is for ages 5 - 12 years old and is sponsored by the Kalihipalama Culture and Arts Society to help preserve the culture of Tahiti.
Being the first time for a Waialua group to enter in Keiki competition, the group was very excited to present their dances of Tahiti. Among nine groups that entered, only three winners were given. First place went to Atooi Marama - Group from Kauai, Second place to Kalena's Polynesian Ohana - Waialua, and Third place to Aloha Pumehana - Waipahu. This makes Kalena's Polynesian Ohana the best Keiki Tahitian dance group on the island of Oahu for 1988. Kalena's Polynesian Ohana placed second in the group otea - wahine and third place in the solo divisions wahine ages 6-8 years - Tiffany Doroha, kane ages 6-8 years - Kevin Kamealoha and wahine ages 9-12 years - Cherrylyn Ramirez.
The group is now preparing for another Tahitian Competition for the older division ages 13 and up. We'd like to extend our many thanks to the community of Waialua and Haleiwa for your support in our group.
